The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has gracefully accepted defeat in Ghana’s 2024 general elections, calling for unity and peace as the nation transitions to new leadership.
Speaking from his residence in a televised message shortly after provisional results emerged, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, as the winners of the polls. He expressed deep gratitude to Ghanaians for entrusting him with the opportunity to serve as Vice President and to lead the NPP’s campaign for the presidency.
Dr. Bawumia confirmed placing a congratulatory call to Mr. Mahama, recognizing him as Ghana’s President-elect. Reflecting on the election outcome, he stated, “During the signing of the peace pact, I emphasized two certainties: Ghana’s victory and enduring peace. Today, the people have spoken, and they have chosen change. We accept this decision with humility and respect.”
Highlighting Ghana’s democratic credentials, Dr. Bawumia explained that his early concession was a deliberate step to ease tensions and safeguard the nation’s reputation as a stable and democratic country. He urged the global investor community to continue believing in Ghana’s political maturity, noting that peace and democracy remain the nation’s most valuable assets.
While acknowledging the disappointment of his supporters, Dr. Bawumia took pride in the NPP’s campaign efforts, stating, “We presented our vision and policies to the electorate with sincerity, but democracy often comes with unexpected outcomes. We respect the will of the people.”
The Vice President assured Ghanaians of the NPP’s commitment to supporting a smooth transition and pledged that the party would provide constructive opposition, holding the incoming government accountable in the interest of national development. “Our role will not be disruptive but focused on ensuring transparency and progress for our beloved country,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia also extended heartfelt gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his family, his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the NPP campaign team, and supporters nationwide for their tireless efforts. He acknowledged the contributions of traditional leaders, religious bodies, security agencies, and the media in fostering a peaceful electoral process.
To the NPP faithful, he offered words of encouragement: “This is not the end of our journey. We may have faced a setback today, but we will regroup and come back stronger. The future remains bright.”
Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in Ghana’s future and reaffirmed his dedication to the principles of democracy and national unity. “Ghana has emerged victorious. Let us move forward with hope and determination.”
