The Bawumia campaign team has denied claims by Kennedy Agyapong that some members of the team attempted to bribe him to step down and be made the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Bawumia Campaign team, in a statement, said it has not approached Kennedy Agyapong for such a running mate offer, nor have they assigned any member of the team to approach him.
“It is also not true as alleged by Kennedy Agyapong that Dr. Bawumia is collapsing the party through intimidation. The unity of our party has been of great concern to candidate Dr. Bawumia. It is in light of such concern that he refrains from responding to unwarranted attacks by others in the contest and has cautioned his supporters against responding to such provocative attacks. His strategy has been to persuade delegates to support his bid. This he does by laying his vision for the party and country,” the statement stated.
The team maintained that the contest for flagbearer in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is an internal one, and all actors, particularly the aspirants, must be guided by the core values of the NPP, which include but are not limited to truth, decorum, and respect for one another.
Meanwhile, an aspiring flagbearer of the NPP, Mr Kenedy Agyepong, organized his Showdown Walk in Kumasi over the weekend to garner support for his campaign.
At his Showdown Walk, he made several allegations, which included the campaign team from Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, attempting to woo him with cash to stand as a running mate. Dr Bawumia is also contesting the flagbearer position of the NPP.
According to Ken, he turned down the offer while accusing Dr Bawumia of engaging in acts that had the potential to collapse the party.
Several NPP loyalists in the Ashanti Region trooped to the Jubilee Park clad in party paraphernalia and branded showdown T-shirts to support the NPP flagbearer aspirant.
The NPP will hold its delegates conference on November 4, 2023, to elect a flagbearer who will lead the party into the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Ken Agyapong placed second to Vice President Bawumia in the party’s August Super Delegates conference.
