The Ashanti Regional Anti-Galamsey Taskforce, led by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has conducted a major operation at New Edubiase along the Pra River, targeting illegal mining activities. The team, which includes personnel from National Security, the Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency, seized seven excavators and immobilized five others. Additional equipment, including two generators, two motorbikes, and pump-action guns, was also confiscated and transported to the Regional Coordinating Council for further action.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the government’s firm position against irresponsible mining, stating that forest reserves and river bodies must remain untouched. He warned against roadside mining and insisted that miners cover their pits after operations to prevent environmental hazards. He reiterated the government’s willingness to assist individuals who are committed to responsible mining practices, stressing that there would be zero tolerance for illegal activities.
The minister, who visited the site with the Regional Security Council, noted that the operation forms part of broader efforts to combat the destruction caused by illegal mining. He urged the public to support the fight against environmental degradation, adding that enforcement measures would continue to ensure compliance with mining regulations.
Authorities believe such operations are necessary to curb the devastating effects of illegal mining on water bodies and forest reserves.
