The right to protest is under unprecedented and growing threat across all regions of the world. Amnesty International has launched a new global campaign within its flagship initiative. The idea is to confront the widening and intensifying efforts of states to erode the fundamental human right to protest.
Amnesty is committed to exposing violations of the right to protest and providing support to movements worldwide.
Protesting is a form of assembly. And to protest is an invaluable way to speak truth to power. Throughout history, protests have been the driving force behind some of the most powerful social movements, exposing injustice and abuse, demanding accountability and inspiring people to keep hoping for a better future.
Unfortunately, these precious rights are under attack and must be protected from those who are afraid of change and want to keep us divided. Governments and others with power are constantly finding new ways to suppress protests and silence critical voices.
The “Protect the Protest” campaign by Amnesty International aims to challenge attacks on peaceful protest, stand in solidarity with those targeted, and provide support to the causes of social movements advocating for human rights change.
The Board Chair of Amnesty International, Mr. Francis Nyantakyi reiterated that the “Protect the Protest” campaign is a beacon of hope, a shield against injustice, and a testament to our unwavering commitment to defend democracy. Amnesty says through grassroots mobilization, legal advocacy, and public awareness, they will push back against efforts to undermine our right to protest.
The panelists believe everyone, everywhere must be protected when protesting without restrictions, as it’s our human right.
The campaign calls on governments to send a clear message that protesters should be protected and to remove unnecessary barriers and restrictions to peaceful protests.
