Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed concern over the resurgence of military coups in West Africa, describing them as a setback to democratic progress in the region.
Speaking at the launch of General Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, in Abuja, Nigeria, on February 20, 2025, Akufo-Addo stressed the need for African nations to strengthen democratic institutions and reaffirm their commitment to multi-party governance.
He noted that coups are being justified by some as responses to economic challenges, unpopular policies, and security threats from jihadist activities in the Sahel. However, he argued that long-term prosperity is best achieved through democracy.
Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to work towards consolidating democratic structures to regain public confidence and ensure stability across the continent.
