The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called for immediate government intervention as tidal waves continue to wreak havoc in coastal communities in the Ketu South Municipality.
He warned that entire communities have been nearly swallowed by the sea, with the water now less than 15 feet from the main road.
Agavedzi, Salakope, and Amutinu are among the worst-hit areas, where relentless tidal waves have consumed homes and encroached upon critical roadways, leaving hundreds of residents displaced.
In response to the crisis, Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has declared a ‘state of emergency,’ emphasizing the need for swift action to safeguard affected communities. Residents have expressed deep concern, as the advancing sea threatens to cut off access to essential services.
The government has distributed relief items, including maize, sachet water, blankets, and plastic buckets, to affected individuals. However, local leaders and residents are urging authorities to expedite sea defense projects to protect vulnerable coastal areas from further destruction.
