Outgoing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to either retain the current Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, or select a new Speaker from within Parliament.
Speaking during the first sitting of the House after a prolonged break, Mr. Afenyo-Markin commended Mr. Bagbin’s leadership, highlighting his contributions to strengthening the institution over the past four years. He noted that Mr. Bagbin’s background as a former Member of Parliament has been instrumental in his effectiveness as Speaker.
“The institutional empowerment you have given to Parliament is unmatched. If you are retained, Parliament will continue to benefit. But should the incoming government choose to replace you, it is important that the new Speaker comes from within and understands the workings of this House,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.
He praised Mr. Bagbin’s focus on the welfare of members, acknowledging occasional disagreements but emphasizing the Speaker’s commitment to Parliament’s progress.
