Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has taken issue with the previous administration over what he describes as an inadequate allocation of GH¢4 million to Ghana’s free dialysis programme.
Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps, he revealed that only GH¢2 million came directly from government funds, while the rest was sourced through corporate social responsibility initiatives.
The minister, who previously served as the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, raised concerns over the lack of a sustainable funding mechanism for dialysis treatment. He stressed that GH¢4 million was insufficient to cover the costs of dialysis sessions, medical consumables, and patient care nationwide.
He further warned that without a reliable funding strategy, the burden on the National Health Insurance Scheme could become unsustainable, especially with the rising costs of treating chronic illnesses and complex surgeries.
