The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated a consignment of essential health commodities to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Accra as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s response to the recent meningitis outbreak.
Dr. Frank Lule, WHO Representative to Ghana, expressed his commitment to supporting the country’s efforts and reiterated that WHO remains fully available to provide additional assistance when necessary.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ministry, Mintah Akando, the Minister of Health, assured the public that the outbreak is under control. He highlighted the dispatch of WHO’s technical assistance in bolstering the ministry’s ongoing efforts.
Mr. Akando further emphasized that there is a sufficient supply of antibiotics available for treating affected individuals. A response team will soon be deployed to the northern part of the country to provide support and reduce the burden on affected communities.
He urged the public to report symptoms to the nearest health facility, stressing that early medical intervention is crucial to effectively manage the outbreak.
The donated commodities include Ceftriaxone, a key medication for treating meningitis, with the current supply expected to treat over 300 individuals. The donated items will be immediately transported to Wa in the northern region, where the outbreak has been most prevalent, to support response efforts in the affected areas.
