The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has declared an indefinite strike, effective October 10, 2024, after 77.95% of its members voted in favor. The strike supports a nationwide ban on illegal mining.
In a referendum organized by UTAG’s National Executive Council (NEC), 2,153 out of 2,762 members backed the strike, urging an immediate stop to mining in forest reserves, farmlands, and water bodies.
NEC invoked Article XIX, Clause 5 of UTAG’s Constitution to declare the strike, emphasizing the need to protect the environment from destructive mining activities.
UTAG demands a formal nationwide ban on mining in protected areas until further notice.
