Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has firmly reassured the public of its commitment to delivering a robust and credible voters register ahead of the 2024 elections. This comes amid concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has requested a forensic audit of the register due to alleged irregularities.
The EC has clarified that such an audit is unnecessary, emphasizing that its ongoing voter exhibition exercise effectively identifies and corrects discrepancies.
Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of operations, highlighted that the exhibition exercise itself functions as a self-audit, allowing the public to verify their details and report any issues for correction before the register is finalized.
He dismissed calls for an external audit as premature, noting that the Commission has been proactive in addressing anomalies, such as illegal transfers of votes by some district officers, which have already been rectified.
Furthermore, the EC has urged the NDC to return to the dialogue table instead of proceeding with their planned nationwide demonstration on September 17.
The Commission believes that maintaining open communication and addressing concerns through established legal processes will ensure the integrity of the electoral process without raising unnecessary tensions.
The EC remains confident in the effectiveness of its mechanisms and assures all stakeholders that the final register will be fit for the upcoming elections.
