From Wednesday, January 24, 2024, Commercial Transport Operators in Ghana will introduce a 20 percent increase in transportation fares nationwide. In justifying their decision, the operators cite significant increases in the cost of lubricants, spare parts, and DVLA Service charges.
This was communicated in a statement, stressing the escalating expenses in the public transportation sector, posing challenges to sustaining their operational activities. The drivers said the continuous surge in lubricant prices, driven by fluctuations in global oil markets, has resulted in a considerable burden on drivers who rely heavily on oil to keep their vehicles running efficiently.
They highlighted the rising expenses for spare parts, specifically for maintenance and repairs, which have significantly hampered their capacity to maintain their vehicles in top-notch condition. Acknowledging the detrimental impacts of these challenges, the Association said they have consulted comprehensively, various stakeholders, including relevant state agencies and other transport associations. The operators say, the increase is necessary to take the edge off the financial difficulties drivers face and secure the sustainability of Ghana’s public transport industry.
