World Autism Awareness Day, observed globally on April 2nd, aims to raise awareness about the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and advocate for the rights and acceptance of individuals with autism.
Established by the United Nations in 2007, the day emphasizes the importance of ensuring equal opportunities and fundamental freedoms for persons with autism.
In an interview with RGGNEWS, Dr. Michael Biney, a medical practitioner, explained that autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition impacting communication and social interaction in children.
He says symptoms typically manifest around the age of one to two years, with challenges in verbal and non-verbal communication.
Dr. Biney emphasized the complexity of diagnosing autism, noting that it cannot be determined by a single symptom but rather requires consideration of multiple factors.
While the exact causes of autism remain unclear, he mentioned that certain risk factors, such as attention deficit disorder and neurological conditions, may contribute to its development.
Despite challenges, the medical practitioner highlighted the potential of autistic persons, noting that many display heightened abilities and intelligence within their range. He stressed the importance of support and education for such persons, advocating against exclusion and emphasizing their right to education and other opportunities.
On World Autism Awareness Day, Dr. Michael urged families not to lose hope and encouraged them to seek guidance from pediatricians and psychiatrists.
