UTAG demands an apology from UniMAC VC over comments on Book and Research Allowance

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC), Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, has received criticism from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) for his comments on the Book and Research Allowances (BRA) provided to teachers.

At a public lecture organized by the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Professor Kwansah-Aidoo expressed his belief that the current funding system for academic research could be improved. He suggested that instead of receiving the money at the end of the year, academics should apply for specific research funding and be required to demonstrate the outcomes of their research through publications and reports.

“For now, we get the money, and I don’t even know what we do with it. We still publish, but in some way, there are people who sit there for 3 years, and they haven’t published anything. They have received Book and Research Allowances for 3 years, so where’s the money gone to?” he quizzed”.

In response, UTAG issued a statement on February 3, 2024, criticizing the UniMAC Vice Chancellor’s comments as condescending and distasteful. They expressed disappointment in his limited understanding of the purpose of the BRA and accused him of displaying disdain towards academics. UTAG argued that the research activities supported by the BRA not only result in scholarly publications but also contribute to the improvement of teaching methods and have a broader impact on society.

“Our research activities do not only end up in scholarly publications as purported by the Vice Chancellor. They also end up enhancing the pedagogics in the lecture rooms and a broader contribution to society. This is why the Union has always stated that the BRA has not been sufficient in delivering the core of research and book purchases”.

UTAG has urged the Vice Chancellor to issue an apology to the entire UTAG membership and actively engage in a constructive dialogue with UTAG. This will enable a better understanding of the perspectives, concerns, and research endeavours of its members.
