Construction of the 400-bed Tema Regional Hospital has stalled, due to government’s debt restructuring programme. The 120-million-euro facility which started in July, 2021 was scheduled for completion in December, 2024. When the President’s representative to the Ministry of Health Dr. Benard Okoe Boye met with management of the Tema General Hospital, he gave the assurance that government will see the project through. The completed facility will significantly improve healthcare delivery in the capital and reduce the burden on the Greater Accra Regional and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals.
The Tema General Hospital, the second largest Ghana Health Service facility within the region, was established in 1954. With a staff strength of over one thousand nine hundred, it performs about two thousand five hundred surgeries and six thousand deliveries a year. It currently has four hundred and twelve beds and seventeen wards. Although a secondary facility, it provides residency training for graduates. The hospital provides a twenty-four-hour specialist and general services on out-patient and in patient basis.
When the President’s representative to the Ministry of Health Dr. Benard Okoe Boye accompanied by the directors of the Ministry met with the Tema General Hospital management, the D-G of the Ghana Health Service said the hospital fully deploys electronic Information Systems which means the system is paperless and networked with other referral facilities among others.
Dr. Benard Okoe Boye had a list of health projects either completed or ongoing by the government. He said government will review and complete all projects stalled by the government’s debt restructuring programme with the IMF.
Prior to their meeting with the contactors of the 400 Bed Tema Regional Hospital Dr. Okoe Boye visited the NICU, Maternity and Post Operative Units to interact with the staff. The entourage was met by the contractors of the 400-bed facility.
The turnkey project is one of four facilities to be constructed with a one hundred and forty million Euro facility acquired by government.
