It is not uncommon to hear reports of Zongo youth being lured by politicians into violence, especially as the electioneering picks up pace. As the youth are cautioned to resist such calls, Politicians are likewise being warned against enlisting young people from Zongo areas in the country to cause trouble during the election.

Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, who sounded the warning, criticized some politicians who instigate Zongo youth to perpetrate violence and confusion during polls.

In an interview with RGG News’ Teye Kitcher on Insight, Sheikh Shaibu emphasized that the regrettable trend must come to an end and cautioned politicians not to involve the Zongo youth, since they have something meaningful to offer their communities and not violence.

He asked politicians to rather use their own children for their dirty deeds.

“Why don’t you use your children so that the first bullet hits them rather than using these young ones?”

“Why are you being unfair to these young ones that have the potential to contribute to national development?”, he questioned.

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu also advised the Zongo youth to resist any attempt by politicians to lure them into committing violence, especially during this year’s electioneering campaigns and other electoral activities.

“Never allow yourself to be reduced to become a tool to visit violence on a political opponent”, he advised.
