Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called for legislation to establish a maximum number of Supreme Court Justices.

While Ghana’s constitution specifies nine judges, it does not set an upper limit.

This proposal follows President Akufo-Addo’s recent nominations of two new justices to replace retiring members. Speaker Bagbin emphasized the need for a cap on the number of justices.

“We need to address the issue of the Supreme Court’s full complement – whether it should be 13, 15, 20, or more. This House must decide,” he stated. I urge you to consider this matter and potentially enact legislation to set an upper limit for the Supreme Court in a nation of 33 million people.”

Mr Bagbin’s comments came after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo nominated Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong to the Supreme Court, in light of Justice Nii Ashie Kotey’s retirement and Justice Mariama Owusu’s impending retirement.

Following the President’s nominations, Speaker Bagbin forwarded them to the Appointments Committee for review and recommendations.
