President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the Ghana Bridge Power Project in Tema, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s energy sector. The $1.2 billion, 590-megawatt combined-cycle power plant, developed through a partnership with Early Power Ltd. and Endeavour Energy, is touted as a transformative project aimed at securing Ghana’s energy independence and driving national development.
Speaking at the commissioning on Tuesday, November 19, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the project as a symbol of resilience and progress, noting its contribution to overcoming the energy challenges that once plagued the nation. “This landmark facility demonstrates the transformative power of collaboration. It sends a clear message: Ghana will no longer be held back by energy shortages,” he stated.
The Bridge Power Plant, the largest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, is expected to provide critical megawatts to Ghana’s national grid, stabilizing electricity supply for homes and businesses. The President underscored the importance of reliable energy in fueling industrialization, economic growth, and essential services. “Reliable electricity powers industries, illuminates classrooms, and supports hospitals. It is the backbone of national development,” he emphasized.
Acknowledging the contributions of the United States, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to Ghana’s American partners and U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, for their steadfast support.
The facility represents more than energy stability—it is a step toward sustainability. Built with an efficient energy mix to reduce carbon emissions, the plant aligns with Ghana’s commitment to a greener and healthier future. The President noted its wide-reaching impact, enabling schools to prepare future leaders, hospitals to deliver life-saving care, and rural communities to thrive.
President Akufo-Addo also reflected on the challenging years of “dumsor” between 2012 and 2016, which disrupted lives and businesses. He described the commissioning as a moment of triumph, signaling Ghana’s determination to leave such crises behind.
As the nation celebrates this milestone, the President reiterated his administration’s dedication to building a self-sufficient and globally competitive Ghana. “Reliable power fuels opportunity, prosperity, and dignity for every Ghanaian. Together, we will continue to build a brighter future,” he affirmed.
The Ghana Bridge Power Project is expected to bolster Ghana’s industrialization agenda, providing the energy infrastructure needed to support sustained economic growth.
