The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has informed the Council of State that Parliament is set to reconvene in early November, following a formal request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary caucus. The caucus petitioned for the urgent resumption of legislative work after parliamentary sessions had been adjourned indefinitely.
The suspension of Parliament was initially prompted by a contentious debate regarding the majority position, which escalated when the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant. This decision intensified tensions within Parliament, with both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) urging a resolution to enable legislative proceedings to resume.
During a meeting with the Council of State, Speaker Bagbin reassured members of his commitment to addressing the issue through constitutional means. He emphasized that in collaboration with parliamentary leadership, his office aims to restore order and ensure Parliament’s effective functioning.
Mr. Bagbin noted that resuming sessions in November will allow members to tackle urgent issues while also working on procedural reforms to prevent similar impasses in the future. He underscored the importance of a swift return to Parliament to resolve the ongoing majority debate and to reinforce Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The Council of State welcomed Speaker Bagbin’s assurances and expressed appreciation for his dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the continuity of legislative activities.
