Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was released after being invited by security operatives on Wednesday, March 19, under unclear circumstances. His detention sparked widespread condemnation, especially from opposition leaders and press freedom advocates.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) described the incident as an attack on democracy, with General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua demanding his release. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also criticized the move, cautioning against using security agencies to intimidate government critics.
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has visited former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison following a raid on his residence by National Security operatives.
Reports indicate that heavily armed officers stormed Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home around 5 a.m., disabled CCTV cameras, and conducted a search, allegedly looking for hidden vaults. Despite the former governor’s denial of having such vaults, the operatives ransacked the property and took four of his vehicles, which were later returned.
The raid has drawn sharp criticism, with concerns raised about the increasing use of security forces in politically sensitive operations.
