The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties have announced plans to lead a peaceful public demonstration in Accra on Monday, May 5, 2025, to protest the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic.

In a formal notice to the authorities, the NPP described the removal as “politically motivated,” warning that it threatens the independence of the judiciary and undermines public confidence in the rule of law and constitutional governance.

The demonstration, organized under the provisions of the Public Order Act, will start at 5:00 a.m. from a point opposite the Supreme Court. Protesters will march past Parliament House and proceed to the Jubilee House, where a formal petition will be submitted.

The statement, signed by Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the NPP, emphasized that the party remains committed to a peaceful and lawful exercise of democratic rights. The NPP has also called on the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security to ensure the safety of all participants.

“We are determined to defend the sanctity of our judiciary and uphold the democratic principles on which this nation is built,” Mr. Ahiagbah stated. “We count on the professionalism and cooperation of the Police Service to ensure a peaceful and orderly demonstration.”

The NPP assured Ghanaians that the protest would be conducted with dignity and decorum, reflecting the party’s respect for constitutional processes and democratic values.
