The National Democratic Congress (NDC) strategy of using dissatisfaction with the economy as a political weapon is not effective, says Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He cited the impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War on the Ghanaian economy and highlighted the mishandling of the economy by the NDC during the 2013-2016 period.
Mr Ahiagbah was emphasitic about the credibility of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, who aims to strengthen the economy. Dr Bawumia’s proposed measures include aligning import duties in Ghana with those in Lome, Togo, to combat smuggling.
“Tema port will be fully automated. We are bringing a new policy for import duty, we are going to align the import duty at Tema port with the import duty at the Lome Port. The ports in Ghana will not charge higher duties than the ports in Lome, this is our policy, we will not charge higher duties because they are our competitors”, he stated.
Mr Ahiagbah also highlighted the achievement of being able to buy electricity units on mobile phones and the government’s support for the judiciary, Ghana Armed Forces, and Police.
“For the first time in our history, people can buy electricity units on their mobile phones, we take it for granted now but a few years ago you had to go and queue at the ECG payment centre to buy electricity,” he added.
