The NDC Caucus in Parliament has called on President Akufo-Addo to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of directors of Lamens Investments Africa, a company accused of repackaging and distributing expired rice to Senior High Schools earlier this year.
North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa alleged that 22,000 kilograms of expired rice were distributed to students under the government’s school feeding program. Addressing the press on Monday, November 18, Mr. Ablakwa criticized the President’s silence on the matter, which has sparked public outrage.
“The NDC Caucus demands the immediate arrest and prosecution of the directors of Lamens Investments Africa Limited, Mr. Agyefi Mensah and Simon Agyei. Mr. Agyei, who was reportedly supervising the illegal operations at the National Food Buffer Stock Company in Kumasi, was released under questionable circumstances after an earlier arrest. We demand his re-arrest and accountability,” he stated.
The Minority also called for a thorough investigation into the National Food Buffer Stock Company, accusing it of storing the expired rice at unregistered facilities. They urged sanctions against the company’s Board and Management for their role in the alleged lapses.
“This reckless disregard for the health of our students, driven by corrupt practices, cannot go unpunished,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
Additionally, the Caucus demanded an inquiry into the Ministry of Education, alleging that it exerted pressure on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to overlook regulatory breaches in the matter.
