The current Energy Minister and former Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is predicted to be announced as the running mate of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the Presidential Elections 2024. This announcement aligns with the party’s mandatory requirements for the election.
Dr. Asah Asante, a senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has declared Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the best candidate for the NPP in light of the current political turmoil.
Dr. Asante highlighted several key factors that underscore the selection of a running mate. Firstly, he stated that the running mate must be capable of replacing the President in the event of a victory and the President’s absence.
He asserts that Dr. Opoku Prempeh possesses the qualifications to assume this role effectively. “He has headed two important ministries of government,” he said.
Additionally, Dr. Asante stressed the significance of popularity in politics, as it is essential for obtaining the required votes. He is confident that Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s popularity with the public will help secure the backing necessary for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP to emerge victorious in the 2024 Presidential Elections.
“Although some critics argue that he is not a unifier, the current situation makes him the perfect choice for the running mate position,” Dr. Asante stated.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP is currently meeting with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to discuss his choice of running mate for the December 7, 2024, Presidential Elections. This meeting is per Article 13 of the party’s constitution, which mandates that the nomination of a running mate must be done in consultation with the National Executive Council.
