The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has seized over one million tramadol tablets at the Tema Port, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the country.
In a statement on Tuesday 13th February, 2023, the Commission says on Monday, January 29, 2024, it interrupted One million and Thirty-Five Thousand (1,035,000) tablets and capsules of tramadol, weighing approximately Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty-Four point thirty-eight kilograms (4,734.38kg).
The seized tramadol varieties included five thousand (5,000) Royal tablets (225mg), packed in fifty-one (51) cartons, along with six thousand capsules of Timaking (120mg), distributed across ninety (90) cartons, and an additional six thousand capsules of Trafradol (120mg), packaged in forty (40) cartons.
This intervention was part of NACOC’s mandate to examine containers at the Tema Port, aiming to prevent the illegal importation and distribution of narcotics within the country.
The Commission has taken custody of the seized consignment and is in the process of transferring it to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for further investigation.
NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to combating the threat of drug trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of the public.
Additionally, NACOC emphasized the legal consequences of possessing and transporting illicit drugs without proper authorization, citing sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of Act 1019 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, which prescribe severe penalties for such offences.
