The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over what it describes as politically motivated raids by security agencies on the residences of former government officials. Speaking at a press conference, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Second Deputy Minority Whip, accused National Security operatives of abusing their authority to intimidate political opponents.
The Minority cited recent incidents, including the raid on the residence of the immediate past Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and similar actions against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu, and others. The group described these operations as unlawful, arguing that the security agencies failed to follow due process, including obtaining warrants before conducting searches.
Mr. Shaib criticized the involvement of the Attorney General in these investigations, arguing that his role should be limited to legal advice rather than direct involvement in raids and arrests. The Minority accused the Attorney General of undermining justice by prejudging cases and influencing investigations.
The NPP minority caucus called on civil society organizations and the media to join in condemning what it described as a dangerous trend of intimidation through state institutions. It warned that such actions threaten Ghana’s democracy by creating a climate of fear and selective justice.
