The Finance Ministry says Parliament has approved an additional US$150 million in financing for Accra’s flood control measures.
This funding will support solid waste management, drainage improvements, and other flood mitigation efforts.
The Ministry made this announcement on Tuesday, May 21, adding that the World Bank facility will support the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) projects.
It lists these to include repairs to sections of the Odaw Basin, construction of storm drains in Kaneshie and Nima-Paloma, and the creation of water detention ponds.
Additionally, a Flood Early Warning System will be established in the Greater Accra Region, along with a waste transfer station and an engineered landfill site.
These initiatives are to reduce flooding along the Odaw River Basin by enhancing drainage, solid waste management, and infrastructure services in high-risk informal settlements.
Approximately half a million people living in low-income communities around the Odaw Basin are expected to benefit directly and indirectly from these projects.
The Ministry also noted that disbursements from this project, along with other expected inflows from the IMF, World Bank, and African Development Bank, will support the exchange rate and macroeconomic stability.
The Ministry of Finance assured all stakeholders that it will continue to collaborate with relevant institutions for the effective use of the facility to achieve its development objectives.
