The Ghana Police Service has assured media professionals of their safety and support during the 2024 General Elections, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding press freedom.
This assurance was given during a stakeholder engagement held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Police Headquarters in Accra. The meeting, led by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, brought together senior journalists, news editors, and police leadership.
Addressing participants, IGP Dampare underscored the pivotal role of the media in fostering a credible election process, describing them as key stakeholders in Ghana’s democratic journey. He noted that the safety of journalists is crucial for the effective fulfillment of their responsibilities as the fourth estate.
“Ghana’s standing as a beacon of democracy is a testament to the collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media,” he remarked.
As part of measures to enhance media security, the Police Service announced the introduction of liaison officers for all media houses nationwide. These officers will act as direct points of contact, addressing security concerns and ensuring the safety of journalists throughout the electoral process.
Additionally, a dedicated toll-free hotline, developed in collaboration with telecommunications companies, will allow the public to share timely information with the Police.
The IGP encouraged journalists to maintain high standards of accuracy and avoid the spread of misinformation or disinformation that could destabilize the electoral environment. He expressed confidence that the measures in place would enable media personnel to carry out their duties without fear or intimidation.
Dr. Dampare also called for collective efforts among stakeholders to ensure that the upcoming elections are marked by peace, security, and order. He urged the media to use their platforms to reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a model of democracy and stability.
The meeting reaffirmed the Police Service’s dedication to fostering collaboration with the media and protecting press freedom as the country heads toward a pivotal electoral season.
