The National May Day celebration for 2024 held at the Independence Square in Accra was a momentous occasion, marked by recognition of exemplary workers and calls for peaceful elections.

Several workers were honoured for their outstanding contributions to labour unions, with representatives from various sectors, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of TUC, Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), and key financial institutions like the Bank of Ghana and Prudential Bank, among others, participating in the parade.

However, amidst the festivities, some workers voiced their concerns through placards, highlighting grievances that needed attention.

Under the theme “Election 2024: The Role of Workers & Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Dev’t,” President Akufo-Addo addressed the crowd, assuring Ghanaians of peaceful and credible elections in the upcoming 2024 national exercise.

Drawing on the recent Ejisu by-election as evidence of Ghana’s commitment to peaceful conduct, the President stressed the importance of maintaining peace and order during elections.

President Akufo-Addo called upon Ghanaian workers to actively participate in the electoral process, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping the country’s future through their votes.

He pledged to utilize all available resources to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), echoed the President’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for the Electoral Commission to conduct credible polls that reflect the will of the people.

He urged other institutions like the Police and judiciary to uphold law and order, protecting the integrity of the electoral process.

Furthermore, Dr. Baah highlighted the urgent need to address the ongoing power challenges, stressing its detrimental effects on businesses and potential for widespread unemployment if not resolved promptly.

He called upon President Akufo-Addo and the government to take immediate steps to mitigate the situation’s impact.
