John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cast doubt on the Akufo-Addo administration’s claim of constructing over 12,000 kilometers of roads across Ghana.
Speaking during a campaign event in the Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom constituency, Mahama criticized the government’s figures, stating that there is no visible evidence to support the claim. He pledged that, if elected, his administration would audit these road projects to determine their legitimacy.
“The NPP says in the eight years of Kufuor, they did 3,000 and something kilometers of road, and NDC did 4,700 km of roads. And they alone have done 12,000 kilometers of roads… when we come, the new roads they said they have done, we will audit them and find out where the money that has been paid for 12,000 kilometers has gone because we can’t find those roads,” Mahama stated.
He also highlighted complaints from traditional rulers about poor road networks nationwide, adding, “Everywhere I go, the main complaint is about the road network.”
In a sarcastic remark, Mahama speculated that perhaps the roads could only be found in President Akufo-Addo’s hometown of Kyebi, saying, “Well, I have not been to Abuakwa and Kyebi, where the president comes from. But I hear the roads [there] are very good, so maybe that is where the 12,000 kilometers of roads are.”
