Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for a comprehensive reset of Ghana’s governance and economic systems, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
Speaking to clergy members, Mr. Mahama referenced an Afrobarometer survey showing that over 80% of Ghanaians believe the country is on the wrong track. He attributed this to what he described as severe economic mismanagement under the current leadership, leading to one of the worst economic and debt crises in the country’s history.
Mr. Mahama stressed the importance of faith and integrity in leadership to address Ghana’s challenges. He likened the nation’s current situation to the biblical story of Joseph in Genesis, who rescued Egypt during a time of famine, suggesting that Ghana similarly needs to be saved from economic difficulties.
He also proposed instituting a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving to foster unity and spiritual reflection.
Mr. Mahama highlighted the role of religious institutions as not only spiritual leaders but also partners in socio-economic development, particularly in sectors such as agriculture and agribusiness. He cited collaborations with churches in poultry production as an example of how religious groups can contribute to economic growth.
In addition, he assured the clergy that religious freedoms would be protected under his leadership.
Criticizing the current government’s handling of the LGBTQ+ issue, he reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act under an NDC government.
