Former President and flagbearer of NDC, John Mahama has delivered a scathing critique of the current administration at a governance forum, urging Ghanaians to bring an end to what he termed an eight-year-long “horror movie.” In his address, Mahama cited alarming statistics from the World Bank and the Ghana Statistical Service, revealing that 870,000 Ghanaians have fallen below the poverty line, while 1.7 million face multi-dimensional poverty under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.
Mr. Mahama condemned the government’s failure to uphold democratic institutions, stating that the advancements made since 1992 have been severely undermined. He emphasized the hollow nature of the government’s pledge to protect the public purse, asserting that rather than safeguarding resources, officials have engaged in rampant corruption and environmental degradation.
The former president criticized the administration for its lack of accountability, especially regarding the soaring national debt, which has ballooned from GH¢120 billion in 2016 to GH¢767 billion in 2024. He attributed rising inflation to reckless financial policies, including the Central Bank’s decision to print more than GH¢70 billion, which he claimed has devastated the economy and led to widespread hardship for Ghanaians.
In a clarion call for reform, Mr. Mahama underscored the necessity of a government that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens, especially the vulnerable. He articulated his commitment to providing real leadership and addressing the pressing needs of the populace, particularly the youth, who are increasingly demanding meaningful change and accountability.
