Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has resigned from his position as coach of Ghana’s Under-17 team, the Black Starlets. His decision to resign came after Ghana lost to Burkina Faso in the ongoing WAFU ZONE B Championship here in Accra.

The Black Starlets began their campaign with an impressive performance by beating neighbours Côte d’Ivoire 5-1 and went on to defeat Benin 2-0. Topping their group with six points from two games, Ghana then qualified for semi-finals where they lost 2-1 to the Burkinabe side.

Following their loss, in a post match conference Laryea Kingston stated that the decision to resign was made before the competition started irrespective of the outcome of the tournament which came as a surprise to the sporting world judging from his recent work with the Under-17 team since taking charge as head coach.

Speaking to some sports pundits they believe the resignation came at a time where the country is trying to revamp its juvenile football.
However, they say it is not clear what might have caused his departure since he did not state clearly why he was leaving the team.
Again, they are of the view that both the GFA and employee had a wrong approach towards the matter thereby opening the door for more speculations.

The Black Starlets will play Nigeria in the 3rd place play-offs on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the University of Ghana, Legon Stadium.
