In a resounding call for continental unity, President Akufo-Addo has implored African leaders to collaborate in the fight against military takeovers, citing the grave implications for regional security, stability, and development.

This was his call when he welcomed the visiting Guinea Bissau President, Umaro Mokhata Sissoco Embalo, to the Jubilee House on Tuesday, 9th April 2024.

Reacting to the President’s message, Blaise Konlan, an international relations analyst, in an interview with RGGNEWS expressed his support for the initiative to promote peace in the West African sub-region.

Blaise Konlan underscored the crucial link between peace and development, stressing that recent political instability fueled by military takeovers threaten progress and prosperity on the continent.

Reflecting on Ghana’s historical journey, he acknowledged the country’s transition to democracy following an uncontrolled period of coups and military rule.

However, he was not happy about the resurgence of coups in Africa in recent years, warning of its adverse effects on development efforts amidst existing challenges like terrorism and trafficking.

The international relations analyst commended Ghana’s leadership in advocating for peace, noting Ghana’s stable democracy since 1992 as a beacon of hope for the continent.

He said African leaders must not only collaborate against military takeovers but also uphold democratic principles, cautioning against constitutional manipulations to prolong their stay in power.

Blaise Konlan advocated for the strengthening of mechanisms like the African Peer Review Mechanism to hold leaders accountable for governance practices and ensure adherence to democratic norms.

Looking ahead, he emphasized the transformative power of peace in unlocking Africa’s potential for development.

He urged leaders to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and work collectively towards a peaceful and prosperous future for the continent.
