Today 12th February is International Epilepsy Day, a globally recognized event established in 2008 by the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE).
Initially observed on February 10th, 2008, this annual event is a vital platform for fostering understanding, providing support, and advocating for improved treatment and awareness of epilepsy.
Every year, International Epilepsy Day falls on the second Monday of February, uniting individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide in a shared mission to address the challenges associated with epilepsy.
Epilepsy, a chronic non-communicable disease of the brain, affects people of all ages, presenting recurrent seizures characterized by brief episodes of involuntary movement. These seizures may involve a specific part of the body or the entire body and can sometimes result in loss of consciousness and control of bodily functions.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 50 million individuals worldwide live with epilepsy, making it one of the most prevalent neurological disorders globally. Alarmingly, WHO estimates that about 25% of epilepsy cases are potentially preventable, underscoring the importance of targeted intervention and awareness efforts.
Despite medical advancements, people with epilepsy and their families continue to face stigma and discrimination in many parts of the world thus, International Epilepsy Day serves as an opportunity to challenge misconceptions, educate the public about epilepsy, promote accessible treatment options, and advocate for inclusive support systems for those affected by the condition.
