Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to commit to a violence-free 2024 election. Speaking at the Diplomatic Honours event in Accra, Chambas recalled the violence that marred the 2020 elections and urged the President to make preventing bloodshed a central goal for his legacy.
“Please, Mr. President, make it your pledge, your mantra, your cardinal goal, to deliver elections in which not a single Ghanaian blood will be shared. 2020 was to some extent a blur on our enviable record in delivering non-violent elections. Let it not be repeated; let us draw a line on that.”
Dr. Chambas also called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to regain public trust by enhancing transparency. He recommended that the EC publish polling station results on its website to improve credibility and transparency, noting that many stakeholders have previously made this request.
“It is not too late to work to win the trust and confidence of all parties and stakeholders in the electoral process,” he stated.
