Hundreds of supporters of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-gay Bill, rallied in Accra yesterday, expressing frustration over the prolonged delay in the bill’s legislative process.
The demonstration, led by Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, one of the bill’s sponsors, involved the presentation of petitions to the Attorney-General and the Chief Justice, urging for expedited judicial action regarding pending court cases linked to the bill.
Representatives from a wide array of religious and traditional groups participated in the protest, emphasizing the need for swift legal resolution. The petitions highlighted concerns about court delays that have stalled parliamentary action on the bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.
Supporters argue that the bill is essential for preserving traditional Ghanaian values, while critics warn it threatens human rights and fosters discrimination.
Demonstrators, dressed in black and red, carried placards with messages such as “You were not produced out of homosexuality” and “Faith and family are protected by law, not LGBTQ+.”
