The Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, and partners – the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspaper and Online Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) and Media Foundation for West Africa, have lifted the media blackout on the Member of Parliament for Yendi, Mr. Farouk Mahama, after he withdrew the lawsuit against GJA and Citi FM, opting for an amicable settlement.
The Media blackout was enforced following allegations that Mr. Farouk Mahama had assaulted Mohammed Aminu Alabira, the Northern Regional correspondent of Citi FM/TV during the NPP parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024. At a media briefing in Accra, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr. Albert Dwumfour emphasized the lifting of the media blackout and called on journalists to comply accordingly. Mr. Dwumfour expressed his disappointment in the NPP for their silence on assaults against journalists in the country, and called for an update on the investigation into Ahmed Suale’s death. He further cautioned the media to maintain professionalism in covering the general election in December.
