When Celestine Addo, a law student at the GIMPA Law School, addressed the Youth Democracy Forum at the Daniel Mckorley Moot Court, she highlighted the importance of democracy in Ghanaian society, referencing Article 35 (6) of the 1992 Constitution.
Celestine Addo highlighted the historical involvement of the youth during the Gold Coast era, citing figures like JB Danquah and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Despite challenges, institutions like the National Youth Agency aim to promote youth participation.
Miss Addo acknowledged constitutional limitations such as Article 62 setting the presidential candidate age at 40. Challenges also include high youth illiteracy rates. Ms Addo called for the translation of the constitution into various languages, promoting awareness, education, and leveraging technology for democratic engagement.
Lastly, she stressed the importance of encouraging youth-led positions and connecting young individuals with mentors free from partisan influences, to empower and guide them toward a promising future.
