For the second consecutive year, Ghana has ranked among the top 25 countries globally for sending students to the United States, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report. Ghana now sits at 18th place, with a record 9,394 Ghanaians studying in the U.S. during the 2023-2024 academic year. This marks a significant 45.2% increase from the previous year.
The report, published annually by the Institute of International Education (IIE), shows that Ghana’s graduate student population has also surged. With 6,337 students enrolled in graduate programs, Ghana is now the 9th largest sender of graduate students to the U.S., reflecting a 54% rise.
In addition to the increase in student numbers, Ghanaian students earned nearly $9.2 million in scholarships, with over 680 U.S. institutions across all 50 states benefiting from their academic contributions.
The U.S. remains the top destination for international students, with more than 1.1 million students enrolled for the 2023-2024 academic year. A majority of international students focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, with math and computer science continuing to grow as leading areas of study.
To assist prospective students, the U.S. Embassy, through EducationUSA, offers guidance on applying to U.S. institutions. EducationUSA Advising Centres in Accra, Kumasi, and the new Osu Centre, which opens in late November, are key resources for students seeking assistance.
