The command of the Ghana Army has changed hands. Major General Bismarck Kwesi Onwona takes over from Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah as Chief of the Army Staff. Prior to this appointment, Major General BK Onwona served in various capacities in the Ghana Armed Forces throughout his Military Career.
Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah ends his service as the Chief of the Army Staff after assuming command in February 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic. With a strategy to produce a highly motivated, well-trained and well-equipped Army, he set off to increase the footprint of the Ghana Armed Forces across the country. He instituted measures to ensure the combat readiness of the Army in the face of the growing threat of terrorism. Under his command, the Ghana Army now has dedicated Brigades for Special Operations, Armour and Signals. Among other successes, the manpower of the Ghana Army is said to have increased by 35 percent with several projects undertaken to improve the living conditions of personnel. Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah says the strongest factor for his success was team work.
The new Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Bismarck Kwesi Onwona is currently the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College. Prior to his appointment, he was the Aide-de-Camp to President Akufo-Addo. Major General Onwona has completed all career progression courses commensurate with his rank. He has vast International Peacekeeping experience among other civil qualifications. Major General BK Onwona enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy in November 1985 and was commissioned on 14th August 1987 as part of Regular Career Course 27.
