Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently held a meeting with senior officials from India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry to address the urgent issue of illicit opioid imports into Ghana. The discussions took place in India and focused on reducing the influx of harmful opioids that are contributing to a public health crisis among Ghanaian youth.
During the meeting, Mr. Ablakwa presented intelligence and evidence collected by the Ghanaian government, following directives from President Mahama to effectively combat the opioid epidemic. The Indian delegation, led by Additional Secretary Ajay Bhadoo, expressed a strong commitment to tackling the issue. They pledged to take stringent actions against Indian pharmaceutical companies involved in these illegal activities, which could include revoking licenses and prosecuting those responsible.
To ensure ongoing efforts, Ghana’s High Commission in New Delhi has been instructed to maintain close contact with relevant Indian authorities, monitor developments, and provide regular updates. Minister Ablakwa expressed his gratitude to India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry for their warm reception and commitment to collaborating with Ghana to resolve this crisis.
