The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kharmecelle Prosper Akanbong, has called for government financial support as Ghana prepares to host the 23rd International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) in December 2025.
During a meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Dr. Akanbong highlighted the significance of the global event, which is expected to bring over 500 fully sponsored participants from Ghana. He stressed the need for adequate funding to ensure its success.
The discussion also touched on Ghana’s HIV response and sustainability challenges, particularly in light of U.S. policies that have affected funding. Dr. Akanbong revealed that a draft for an HIV fund is at an advanced stage, with measures being taken to secure resources for a locally driven response.
He further disclosed ongoing talks with GIZ and pharmaceutical firms to enhance the local production of antiretroviral drugs through technology transfer, a move aimed at reducing reliance on external supply.
Mr. Akandoh, in response, commended Dr. Akanbong’s efforts and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling HIV/AIDS. He emphasized the importance of reviving Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry to manufacture antiretroviral drugs locally and pledged support for the conference and other strategic initiatives.
