Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has held discussions with the UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, focusing on the country’s economic outlook, fiscal policies, and key social interventions outlined in the 2025 Budget.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday, underscored Ghana’s commitment to strengthening social protection programs despite economic challenges. Dr. Forson highlighted government efforts to cushion the most vulnerable, including an increase in funding for key welfare initiatives.
He announced that the School Feeding Programme will see an increment from GH₵1 to GH₵2 per meal, with plans for further increases. The Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) payments will also be enhanced to provide additional relief to beneficiaries.
Additionally, the government has moved to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), and other statutory funds to enable these institutions to operate at full capacity.
High Commissioner Harriet Thompson commended Ghana’s fiscal direction and emphasized the UK’s continued support, particularly in climate finance. She reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to working with Ghana to drive sustainable economic initiatives.
Dr. Forson described the engagement as a reaffirmation of the strong partnership between the two nations, stressing the government’s dedication to economic resilience, social protection, and sustainable growth.
