The Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Dr. Angela Dwamena Aboagye says the existence of Witches Camps is a stain on the conscience of the country.

She said it is inhuman for the country to continue to tolerate the setting up of such camps; be it shrines, churches or witches camps, to subject innocent and vulnerable people to such levels of inhumane treatment.

“I think the camps are a blight on this nation’s conscience. The fact that they exist means that something has gone wrong somewhere and because for the women it appears to be the only place for them not to be safe and not get lynched”, she said.

In interview with RGG News’ Teye Kitcher on Insight, Dr. Dwamena Aboagye was not happy about the failure of government to assent to the law criminalising the declaration, accusation, naming or labelling of another person as a witch in Ghana.

“The lynching of Akua Denteh was a unique opportunity to take the bold decision to close all such places. I was disappointed in our failure to do so”, she said.

She however called for a holistic approach to end this act by paying more attention to dissuading communities from attacking alleged witches.

She also stressed the need on the part of government to conduct proper sensitisation at the various communities to ensure that the act is curbed.
