The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public that military personnel will not be stationed at any polling station during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. This measure underscores GAF’s commitment to supporting a peaceful and transparent electoral process while ensuring national security.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the Armed Forces clarified that its role will be limited to standby support, with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) taking the lead in election security. The military will only be deployed upon a formal request from the police.

“This collaborative approach ensures that the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully while maintaining law and order,” the statement read.

To prevent potential misunderstandings or incidents of impersonation, the GAF has called on the public to report any sightings of individuals dressed in military uniforms or accoutrements at polling stations. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through the Ghana Police Service toll-free numbers: 18555 or 0800 311 311.

This directive aims to preserve the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that any unauthorized individuals are dealt with promptly.

The Ghana Armed Forces further encouraged citizens to exercise their civic rights responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid any acts that could disrupt the peace.

Reiterating its dedication to national stability, GAF emphasized its role in safeguarding the sovereignty of Ghana and upholding the credibility of the elections.

The 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on December 7, with security agencies pledging their readiness to ensure a smooth and peaceful process.
