The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the newly nominated flagbearer for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), citing issues with his nomination documents.
At a press conference on Tuesday, November 12, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa disclosed that Mr. Kubi’s disqualification followed a thorough examination of his submission. According to Mensa, the GFP was given the chance to address some discrepancies, but certain “irregularities” in the documents could not be overlooked.
The GFP had initially sought a replacement for Akua Donkor, the party’s founding leader and original flagbearer, who passed away unexpectedly on October 15. In response, the EC extended the nomination deadline by 10 days, allowing the GFP to put forward Mr. Kubi as its new candidate.
However, after reviewing Mr. Kubi’s documents, the EC determined that some elements were “illegitimate” under Ghana’s electoral laws. Jean Mensa highlighted the EC’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity, noting that substantial legal issues in the GFP’s submission could not be waived.
This disqualification presents another hurdle for the GFP, which had already experienced a significant setback with Akua Donkor’s passing.
Jean Mensa reaffirmed the EC’s commitment to a fair and lawful electoral process, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to regulatory standards to preserve public confidence.
