The Central Region has recorded seven deaths and 47 confirmed cases of cholera, with 720 additional suspected cases since October 31, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS). The outbreak has affected eight districts, including Awutu Senya East and West, Gomoa East, Mfantseman, Gomoa West, Agona West, Cape Coast, and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira.
Acting Regional Director of the GHS, Dr. Agnes Achiama Anane, revealed during a press briefing that the fatalities occurred in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality, Assin North and South, and Gomoa West districts. She noted that most deaths were preventable, as four patients arrived at health facilities in critical condition, while three were pronounced dead on arrival.
Health authorities are urging the public to follow strict hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing, using sanitizers, and ensuring safe handling of food and water. These measures, widely observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, are crucial to curbing the spread of the disease.
Dr. Anane emphasized the importance of seeking early medical care for symptoms like acute diarrhea and dehydration, which can become life-threatening if left untreated.
She called for collective action, encouraging residents to maintain clean environments and adopt healthy dietary habits to prevent further spread. “A unified effort is needed to contain this outbreak effectively,” she stressed.
