Bawumia launches Telecel Ghana

Historically, Ghana Postal and Telecommunications Department was transformed into a corporation in 1974, then it became Ghana Telecom in 1996. In 2009 along with its mobile subsidiary OneTouch, it was rebranded to Vodafone Ghana. Today, Ghana Telecom has a new name – Telecel Ghana. And Telecel says they are connecting energies, passion and hustles for a freedom telecommunications experience.

At the unveiling in Accra, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia while urging Telecel to uphold the highest standards of ethics, transparency and corporate governance, challenged them to include a deliberate investment and development of the digital capabilities and capacities of young Ghanaians.

Ghana Telecom has undergone another name-change, and rebranded to Telecel Ghana. This follows Telecel’s acquisition of 70 percent stake of the Vodafone Ghana to become the majority shareholder in February, 2023 with the government of Ghana owning the remaining 30 percent.

Telecel is an Africa-focused telecommunication company with expertise in combining telecommunication with fintech, e-commerce and tech start-ups development. Telecel is promising innovation into Ghana’s telecom industry with customer-centered products delivered with exceptional customer service. Telecel has thus embarked on a relaunch process and unveiled the new brand of red and white to Ghanaians.

Madam Patricia Oboe Nai is the first Chief Executive of Telecel Ghana and according to her Telecel promises quality telecommunications to customers and businesses.

The Board Chair of Telecel Nicolas Bourg, said Telecel is coming to the Ghana with enormous experience which will give Ghanaians the best telecommunications experience

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, challenged Telecel to make its operations impact Ghanaians and businesses positively.

Dr. Bawumia said the government has invested a lot in the telecommunications sector to make companies thrive including roaming services.

The Vice President, said Telecel’s investment in Ghana is a testament to the conducive environment built for access to reliable and efficient communication which is not just luxury, but a necessity for socioeconomic development.
