The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, has announced that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed into law the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024.
The new legislation, which aims to promote gender equality, is seen as a significant milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive society.
The Act is designed to ensure that women have equal opportunities in various sectors of the economy, with a focus on improving female representation in decision-making positions. Parliament passed the bill in June 2024, following years of advocacy from gender rights organizations.
According to the Minister’s post on X, the next step following the President’s assent will be the implementation of the Act.
Gender advocates and civil society organizations have long called for such legislation to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles across the country.
